Second Week of Internship in Media Relations Office at the Art Gallery of New South Wales

In the following week it was a pleasure to meet Andrew Taylor, who writes for the Sydney Morning Herald. He was going through story ideas with the Media Relations staff, what sort of articles could be done in the future as interviews with art collectors, curators at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and what themes to explore next.

Kym Elphinstone came in to meet the Media Relations staff. She is at the forefront of Public Relations for Art Month, held in Sydney for the first time this year throughout March. (www.artmonthsydney.com) Kym is also in publicity for Sydney’s 17th Biennale, 12 May to 1 August, 2010. Exciting times, talking about what will be exhibited at the Art Gallery as part of the Biennale. (www.biennaleofsydney.com.au)

Before the announcement of Archibald finalists, my duties during the internship included updating contact details of Art Gallery of New South Wales media contacts list. I struggle with labeling images of finalists’ works, which will be announced to the media on Wednesday 17 March.

The media at the announcement of the Archibald finalists for this year are each given a press release and a disc with images of the works by the 34 finalists out of 849 entries. The winner of the Packing Room Prize is announced on the same day. This all happens in the area where the Archibald exhibition will be held, with the finalists’ works already exhibited.
